Education imageThere are many options for you to train for the travel and tourism industry.

As a first step, you will need to obtain a Certificate III in Travel (SIT30216) and this course is available at many registered training organizations (RTO) around the country.

However, we recommend you to consider taking it at one of the AFTA accredited training providers as these RTOs have gone through a strict due diligence and have submitted to an on-going quality check by AFTA Education and Training. This includes, but not limited to, proving a robustness of their internal governance policies, an active participation in our industry PD sessions & educational forums, a strict adherence to a regulatory compliance and a commitment to deliver - Certificate III in Travel (SIT30216), an industry centric qualification designed to meet the fundamental needs of an entry level travel consultant and it fulfils an education criteria of the ATAS accreditation, and above all, AFTA accredited training providers have to continually demonstrate their active alliance with our industry business practitioners through a number of good initiatives. They include TAFE, Private Colleges and industry training specialists.

Certificate III in Travel is a carefully designed (by AFTA E&T) qualification for the travel industry. It contains (14) core and (3) elective units of competency and are available at AFTA accredited training providers in a variety of modes, such as campus based, online or blended training (both online and on campus) to provide you with the learning option that suits to your needs.

http://www.afta.com.au/education/afta-accredited-training-providers Upon a successful completion of your training through one of the premium AFTA accredited training providers, you will also gain an AFTA certificate as well as a standard AQF one, in recognition of your competence in the knowledge and skills of an entry level travel consultant. This may give you a further support to your application for job opportunities in the travel & tourism industry.

You can also study at other TAFE or Private RTO or at some universities and in some cases individual companies will provide on the job training. Check with us by emailing to admin@afta.edu.au before you commit yourself to taking up this course as you may not be required to do a complete program if you have previous qualifications or experiences which might entitle you with some concession from taking a full program. This is known as a Recognition of Prior Learning.

Traineeship program will also be available in the near future through AFTA Education and Training to approved applicants. Please check this page regularly for further details or contact us by email if you are interested in this program. Traineeship is generally available for those who are school leavers seeking a career in the industry and those who wish undergo on-the-job (paid) training while studying for further qualifications. Senior high school students can also study tourism as part of their senior education certificate and in some cases it will contribute to the score for university admission.

School

You can complete a tourism qualification as part of your HSC. In some cases it will count towards your university entrance score as well as receive advance standings should you continue with your studies at a vocational education college.

Learn through practical experience

Travel & Tourism qualifications are available at Certificate 11, 111 and IV level as well as Diploma and Advanced Diploma at AFTA accredited training providers and can be linked to an industry sub sector or job role. Short courses are also available to suit individual organisations and or an individual's skill gap requirements. If you undertake a Diploma or Advanced Diploma at a vocational education college you may be eligible to receive credits towards a degree course at many universities. This is a viable alternative pathway to a university degree where you gain all the required practical industry skills prior to your university studies

University

Many universities offer training in tourism related qualifications such as Bachelor of Tourism Management, Masters of Tourism Management and other related degrees such as Bachelor of Business with marketing, management and tourism majors. Visit the university websites for more information.

Career Pathways Map

The Career Pathways map provides an overview of travel industry job roles categorised by industry sector. Qualifications are highlighted in the left column that are considered 'ideal' for entry level to the travel industry. Qualification levels change as the individual progresses through to management. Please note that skills and knowledge are transferable across all industry sectors making it possible to change career pathways.
